STPP or Sodium Tripolyphosphate is an inorganic compound with formula Na5P3O10. STPP, Sodium Tripolyphosphate is the sodium salt of the polyphosphate Penta-anion, which is the conjugate base of triphosphoric acid. Sodium tripolyphosphate is produced by heating a stoichiometric mixture of disodium phosphate, Na2HPO4, and monosodium phosphate, NaH2PO4, under carefully controlled conditions.
Details
Properties: white granular or powder. Density of 0.35-0.90g/cm3, melting point of 622 ℃. Soluble in water, aqueous solution is alkaline, PH of 1% aqueous solution is 9.7. It is generally hydrolyzed into phosphite in water, and it has good ability of complexation metal ions. It can be combined with calcium, magnesium, iron and other metal ions to produce soluble complex. It can soften hard water. As an inorganic surfactant, it has the properties of a certain organic surfactant.

Other uses include "ceramics (increase viscosity of the glazes upto a certain limit), leather tanning (as masking agent and synthetic tanning agent - SYNTAN), anticaking, setting retarders, flame retardants, paper, anticorrosion pigments, textiles, rubber manufacture, fermentation, antifreeze."STPP is used as a polyanion crosslinker in polysaccharide based drug delivery.
It is mainly used in synthetic detergents as additives, soap synergist and prevent soap grease from precipitation and frost. It has a strong emulsification of lubricating oil, and can be used to adjust the buffer soap PH value, and used as softener of industrial water , dyeing auxiliaries, and dispersing agent of making suspension in paint, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate and other industries, drilling mud dispersant, anti oil agent of papermaking industry.
